Margot Robbie and her three siblings were raised by their single mother on the Gold Coast of Australia. Sporting braces and with an obsession with Harry Potter, she planned on becoming a magician but soon fell in love with acting. Now a knockout blonde, the 17 year old headed to the big city, sleeping on friends’ couches while chasing her silver-screen dreams. She first found success with the ABC series Pan Am but that only took flight for one season.
Margot Elise Robbie was born on July 2 1990 in Dalby, Queensland, Australia. Her brothers Lockie and Cameron, and older sister Anya, quickly gave her the nickname Maggot.
Their parents divorced early on, and their single mother, Sarie a physiotherapist, raised the four in the Gold Coast. The family would often spend time on their grandparents farm. Growing up, Margot fell in love with the Harry Potter books and even lied about her perfect vision to get glasses so she could look like young Danielle Radcliffe, good thing she didn’t opt for the forehead scar as well. At 15 she recalled watching a TV show and noticed that the young actress poorly delivered a line. Margot thought to herself, I could to that better and from there gave up on her previous plans of being a magician to instead become an actress.
When she was 16 she had 3 part time jobs including bartending, sandwich artist and surfboard sales woman. But it was a small part in a student film that convinced her to move to Melbourne and pursue acting. After graduating from Somerset College when she was 17, Margot couch-surfed in the big city. She landed bit parts in two films directed by Aash Aaron – Vigilante in 2008 and I.C.U. Then her agent told her the Aussie soap opera ‘Neighbours’ was looking for a new face.
She called their production company every day and finally convinced a producer to sit down with her. In June 2008 she snagged a guest role as Donna Freedman, but did such a good job they decided to keep her on as a regular character.
That year she became one of the most popular new faces on Australian television, and was nominated for a Logie Award, and a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards for Favourite Hottie.
In late 2010, Margot announced she would be quitting the show to move to Hollywood. She got to LA just in time to audition for a Charlie’s Angels reboot. She realized that she was another fish in a big pond and her name was causing her grief again with everyone misspelling it without the T or with a Q and X. The Charlies Angel’s reboot she didn’t get, but producers thought she was the perfect fit for another series.
Pan Am, if that show doesn’t ring a bell it’s because it was cancelled after one season. The next month Martin Scorsese called her to audition for ‘the hottest blonde ever’ in The Wolf of Wall Street. No seriously, that’s how the character is described in the script.
Margot only had 30 seconds in that casting room and she was determined to leave a lasting impression. Her and DiCaprio engaged in a yelling match, and if you haven’t seen Leo when he’s angry, it looks really scary.
Margot struggled to keep up then eventually he said, “Now get over here and kiss me.’ So Margot walked up, slapped him in the face and told him to fuck off. Everyone in the room froze, and Margot thought that would be the end of her career. Luckily Scorsese and DiCaprio both started laughing and Leo liked it so much, he asked her to hit him again.
She was only 22 at the time but her performance as the Brooklyn bombshell solidified her spot as one of the top emerging actresses in Hollywood and finally everyone was spelling and saying her name correctly. Next up was Focus opposite Will Smith. The Legend of Tarzan. Suicide Squad & her own stand alone Harley Quinn film. She’s also met a man. Assistant Director Tom Ackerley. They were friends for years and she chased after him.
